K2K is a group of high school students who have been inspired to "Give Back" to their community through work with special needs children. K2K mentors special needs children in all facets of ther lives.
Ms. Rose Mary Frattina, a parent and special education teacher for Grades 5 & 6 in our school district, has been invovled with K2K for the past five years. She shares the following: Autism is a part of my daily life. It has been ever since my son, Sal was diagnosed on the autistic spectrum. He is now 15 years old. Being a special education teacher has helped me through a lot of the “educational programs and paperwork,” but being a parent I was always searching for recreational programs.
One program I have found that helps my son socially is called, Kids to Kids! Sal is involved in many programs but this program really fits his needs and his passion for swimming.
Sal has been a participant of this program for over five years! This program was designed for a child with autism to be paired up with a buddy to participate in a recreational activity. Many activities are offered through Kids to Kids and the most important one for Sal was swimming. Every Saturday, he and his high school buddy will swim for an hour. Sal has learned the basics of swimming and has developed socially because of his buddy; it is a one on one program. The buddies —or mentors— are trained to work with the children. They develop a relationship with the child and it turns into a beautiful friendship!
