Mendham Borough STEAM
Enrichment Academy • Summer 2015
We are pleased to announce the launch of our registration website for the 2015 STEAM Summer Enrichment Academy! STEAM education provides an interdisciplinary approach to learning focusing on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. This educational shift emphasizes real-life application, creative problem solving and critical thinking.
The STEAM academy will address the goal of our District Strategic Plan to expand 21st Century learning opportunities for our students. We are very excited to offer a variety of innovative courses developed by our own district teachers.

Instructor: Kathy McGoldrick
Grades: 3 & 4
How many paper cups can support your weight? Which shapes are best for holding weight on bridges? How high a tower can you build using only straws and pins, and can it even support a cup of pennies? In this Mendham Borough STEAM Enrichment Academy course, students will investigate geometric and physical principles and how they operate in real world structures, namely bridges, foundations, towers, and dams. Students will predict, gather, record, and interpret data and patterns while testing and investigating the shapes and strength of structures and joints. While working in small teams, budding engineers will attempt solutions to simple engineering challenges using basic, everyday materials while working with design parameters. Students will be encouraged to investigate and apply formal design principles, and to revisit and rework designs to increase their performance.

.Cardboard Roller Coasters
Instructor: Paul Damato
Do you like riding roller coasters? Well, the only thing more exciting than riding one would be building one! Loop the loops, banked curves and high speed turn are all part of the action. This Mendham Borough STEAM Enrichment Academy course will focus on the construction of a roller coaster using cardboard as a building material. While building the roller coasters we will learn and discuss all of the components and issues that roller coaster engineers face when building one for an amusement park:
- The principles of conservation of energy
- Gravity and Friction
- Kinetic and Potential Energy
- G-Force and Acceleration
